Shilan gained an Honours Law degree in 1980 at University of London where he also undertook his Law Society Final Examination. He qualified as a solicitor in November 1983 and was made a partner with Shah & Co., that firm being the predecessor to Everatt's Solicitors.

He has a wide range of experience in dealing with the law. He has a well- established client base consisting of private and corporate clients. Whilst he is general practitioner his specialist areas are in dealing with all the commercial matters including commercial property and litigation, primarily bought about from experience gained advising business clients on all aspects of the law as they affect business. The main areas in which he specialises are all commercial property and litigation.
